It summarizes the news articles of the past 10 years of Korean society by period and age, analyzes citizens' emotions, reveals the ageist problem, and proposes a solution to the conflict between generations as basic data for the exhibition of the Jeju grape museum
Five teams were first selected for the "Convergence Research Project Contest for the Spread of Social Empathy for Dementia" hosted by the T&C Foundation, a non-profit foundation that SK Chairman Chey Tae-won appeared in April 2023 to emphasize social responsibility and sustainable development, and the Big Data Convergence Research Team of Professor Kim Kyung-won of Incheon National University, Professor Shin Soo-min of Korea National Transportation University, and Professor Heo Jun-nyeong of Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital was finally elected and awarded KRW 100 million in prize money and conducted more than a year of research. Since then, the research report has been used as basic data for the exhibition to add warmth to our view of the life of old age, "Maybe Beautiful Days," which has been held at the grape museum on Jeju Island since March 2024, and to seek sympathy between generations, and the exhibition was finally concluded on March 20, 2025.
Based on Chairman Chey Tae-won's philosophy, the T&C Foundation emphasizes entrepreneurship that fulfills social responsibilities and creates social values through talent discovery and social enterprise support. Examples include "cultivating social enterprises" to discover social entrepreneurs with creative and innovative ideas, "cultivating young people's ability to solve social problems through creative and innovative thinking," and "realizing social values" that support various social problem-solving projects such as environment, education, health, and inequality through global social enterprise support, not limited to Korea. The big data convergence research team finally analyzed intergenerational conflict trends and consensus on ageism in Korean society under the title "Ageism Problem-conscious Big Data Analysis and Text Mining Analysis."
Ageism is a phenomenon that encompasses all emotions, perceptions, and behaviors as it maintains social understanding, negative attitudes, prejudices, and stereotypes about individuals or groups based on age. To think about what areas can intervene to solve the Ageism problem, news articles published by online Google and Naver for about 10 years from January 2013 to August 2023 were collected in a Python crawling manner. It includes news from 26 media companies in the economic, social, cultural, and international sectors, including five broadcasters, 11 national daily newspapers, eight economic daily newspapers, and two specialized magazines. Before entering Korea's aging society, the main voice was the need for "a service to prepare for dementia at the family level with the age of 100 summarized as a social problem, and to prepare for these problems." And as time passed, as we entered the aging society, we were able to find a trend of increasing the need for "complex policies at the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the government level to solve social problems such as old age, population, economy, and real estate." In addition, we were able to analyze the differences in words that citizens felt positive or negative in the news media, and summarize what concerns they had according to their age groups. It is thought to be a major information that can be used as a reference for healthy consensus and convergence in our society in the future in the media and government agencies.
The research team was able to listen in-depth to the opinions of citizens appearing in the news media using big data and artificial intelligence technology in order to find generational conflicts and consensus due to ageism that are increasingly surfaced in Korean society. Professor Kim Kyung-won of Incheon National University, the head of the research, said, "I proposed two areas that can intervene to solve the problem of Ageism. First, in order to reduce ageism, education is needed to convey information, knowledge, skills, and competencies to reduce stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination. Intervention measures that include or combine elements of intergenerational contact are the most effective (intergroup contact theory), as prejudice and stereotypes can be reduced through perspective change and empathy increase. Second, it is a series of messages delivered in a systematic communication method during a specific period, and it is possible to derive improvement of knowledge/awareness and behavioral change by providing information to the public. The longer the period and the greater the intensity of exposure, the more effective it is, and framing is possible with the effect of campaigning through exhibition. Through this study, big data was crawled with keywords related to Ageism for 10 years, emotional analysis was performed based on related keywords, and various opinions from interviews were collected to solve problems between generations in parts that were not filled with such quantitative big data. In common, activities or education that can increase the contact point between generations were mentioned as a point to resolve generational conflicts. In this regard, it remains regrettable that ideas for non-exhibition educational activities that can increase contact point with the elderly generation during the exhibition at the Grape Museum were not implemented due to limited time and environment. It was an opportunity for experts in three fields of big data, artificial intelligence, welfare for the elderly, and cognitive function of the elderly to consider and respect the boundaries of each discipline and conduct convergence research. I would like to express my infinite gratitude to the T&C Foundation for its consideration for such research to proceed."
